You'll need to get to Harwich to board the ferry. It's a 30-minute drive from Ipswich or a 90-minute drive from Norwich. From London, you can take the train and it should take around 2 hours, or you can drive it in 90 minutes. Birmingham is about 3 hours drive away.
The ferry will drop you off at the Hook of Holland which is about an hour from Amsterdam. You can catch the train easily which takes about 90 minutes.
