A cheap flight to Lima means the rest of Peru is at your fingertips pirates. The awe-inspiring ancient city of Machu Picchu is the highlight of many visitors' trips to South America. The conquering Spanish never found the Inca citadel - it was pretty much undiscovered until the 20th century, meaning it is very well preserved.
Lake Titicaca, in the east of the country, is one of the highest altitude lakes in the world and features rather unique 'floating islands' - islands made from buoyant totora reeds by the local Uros people. Don't forget that Peru is situated close to the Equator and has a long Pacific coastline. As such it has beaches and surf spots aplenty. One of the best is Máncora in Northern Peru, close to the border with Ecuador.
The city of Cusco is the gateway to Machu Picchu and it is quite easy to fly there. The flight takes just over 1 hour and can be booked via our lovely Flights Comparison Tool:
Lima combines pre-Columbian temples, colonial buildings and modern skyscrapers. Crumbling cliffs meet the waves of the Pacific Ocean. People say Peru has the best cuisine in South America - a product of hundreds of years of mestizo living, the mixing of cultures, the waves of new and old immigration. The ceviche is not to be missed! The city has accommodation options to suit all budgets. How about a stay in Lima's most upmarket neighbourhood?
