Yo ho ho! Christmas is coming pirates, and who can resist getting into the festive spirit? Christmas markets are nothing new; so rather than head to your knock off local 'German' Christmas market, why not head to the real deal!
We've picked our favourite ones around Europe for you to enjoy, and soak up the Christmas atmosphere (as well as a mulled wine or two... maybe three)! Every year, the city centre of Cologne is transformed by the magic of Christmas. When the markets in Cologne open their gates on the last Monday before Advent, millions of visitors from around the world delight at the goods on sale at one of the charming 150 Buden (stalls).
Prague, Czech Republic
Christmas markets open daily at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. A proverbial winter wonderland for the festive fan. Christmas carols, food and drink are all enjoyed in a fantastic Advent atmosphere. This years event runs from 2nd December - 6th January.
The Budapest Christmas and Winter fair is the perfect place to find something special and unusual for a loved one. Cottage style wooden huts fill an impressive square right in the heart of the city. The air is filled with the smells of cookies, wine and cinnamon! Festivities begin mid November!
You won't be spoilt for choice when you head to the German capital, with 50+ Christmas markets throughout the city. We'd definitely recommend checking out the one from the picture below in Gendarmenmarkt. The market season kicks off mid-late November!
The fairytale atmosphere of this Christmas market, which is held in the Town Hall Square makes anything possible! At the heart of it all (apart from Santa and his reindeers, who are always a huge hit with the kids) is Estonia's most famous Christmas tree! You could even plan a trip to see the grand opening on 18th November!
Strasbourg hosts the oldest Christmas market in France, dating back to 1570 and it is something not to be missed. With around 300 chalets across 11 locations in the city, there's definitely something for everyone. Head there between 24th November and 31st December so you don't miss out!
The origins of Christmas markets in Munich are said to be traceable to the 14th Century. Today there are plenty to choose from with markets in virtually every neighbourhood of the Bayern region's capital. The last Monday of November is the date to look out for, to make sure you don't miss out!
Vienna hosts a spectacular event every year from the middle of November. There are over 150 different stalls to choose from around the city with the most popular market being the Christmas World at Rathaus Platz
