It’s well known that the diverse and picturesque landscape of New Zealand was used to film the Lord of the Rings movies. Many superfans have traveled overseas to see Middle Earth in person.

You can visit a specially-made Hobbit village in Matamata, the elven area of Rivendell in Kaitoke Regional Park and even make a journey to Mount Doom in Tongariro National Park.

And now there’s something new for LOTR fans to explore! After 11 years of closure to the public, another filming location - Deer Park Heights - is open once again. This area was featured in a number of Lord of the Rings film scenes, such as Gandalf’s ride to Gondor and the attack of the Wargs. There’s even a helpful map on the website to help you find all the filming spots.

Outside of its Hollywood status, the park is also beautiful in its own right. This 800-hectare deer farm features mountain views, rolling green hills, and the chance to spot wildlife like miniature horses, llamas, and alpacas as you do a self-guided driving tour through the property.
