Pirates, once in a while we all say we want to get away from it all. That is of course what this site is here for! For those who really want to put their money where their mouth is, Easter Island may be the perfect holiday destination. 2,500 km from the South American mainland, 2,000 km from the nearest inhabited place (Pitcairn Island) and whopping 44+ hour trip from the UK, Easter Island may be one of the hardest places to get to on earth.
The first European arrival to the island was the Dutchman Jacob Roggeveen. He landed on Easter Sunday, 5th April 1722, and gave the island the name by which it is most famously known to date (the local indigenous name is Rapa Nui). The island was initially populated by Polynesian settlers who arrived some 1,000 years previously. Pretty impressive navigation considering how far the island is from anywhere else.
The most famous feature of Easter Island are the Moai, those giant monolithic statues carved out of stone. Some of the biggest were up to 10 metres tall and weighed up to 82 tons, so the debate still rages as to just how they were able to transport them around the island. The theory is that they were carved in order to show respect to ancestors, the remembrance of which was a key part of island life. They tended to be found at the coast facing inland - the ancestors looking over their descendants. Several Moai have been restored around the island and can be visited.
How to get there
Easter Island is far, very far. If you want to buy a ticket all the way from the UK, it can be quite costly. We recommend adding a stop in Santiago de Chile on the way, this could help to bring down the cost of flights, and you'll also get the opportunity to explore an awesome city!
