If you thought that building that snowman last week took it out of you, send some love to the ice architects that craft the stunning Hôtel de Glace each year.
After melting, the unique hotel is rebuilt every year. Made entirely of ice and snow, it attracts many visitors annually. Due to the current situation, you can also see it online by going on a 3D virtual tour!
Located just 20 minutes' drive from Quebec City in Village Vacances Valcartier and is open from January to March. How much snow and ice does somewhere like this take to build? You'll only need 40,000 kg of snow! The design includes 44 themed rooms that can be visited now virtually and from comfort of your own home! In addition to the rooms, there is also a water slide, ice bar and a chapel where weddings can actually take place.
All beds in the hotel are also made of ice, have a solid wooden base and insulated mattresses. In the evening, each guest will receive a warm sleeping bag that can withstand temperatures from -15 ° to -30 ° C. At night, from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m., you can use the relaxation area, including a SPA and an outdoor sauna. You can relax under the stars or ... under the snowflakes!
Every year, the ice hotel has its own theme. This year's theme is Quebec's tales and legends.
The idea for an ice hotel was born in 1996, when Jacques Desbois, after seeing a similar hotel in Iceland, wanted to create something similar in Canada. The first edition started in 2001 and this year celebrates 21 years of existence. For 6 weeks a year, a team of 30 employees and 15 ice sculptors work to create this ice and hospitality masterpiece. The hotel has so far been visited by around 2 million guests, 70,000 of whom have dared to stay in the ice rooms.
