Mateys, you may have a European Health Insurance Card for when you travel to Europe but as these will no longer be available we're here to tell you what you need to do to still be covered.
The European Health Insurance Card is being replaced with a new card called the Global Health Insurance Card. Don't be fooled by the name though pirates, it does not cover you 'globally' but only when visiting countries within the EU.
What do you get if you have the card? The Global Health Insurance Card entitles you to the same treatment at state-run hospitals and GPs in the EU that locals are entitled to receive and for the same price!
Please note: The European Health Card allowed you the same treatment in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland and a few more countries outside of the EU but this has stopped since 1st January 2021. The new Global Health Insurance Card is also only valid in the EU!
If you have a European Health Insurance Card currently and it is still in date you are still covered using this card until it runs out.
NEVER pay for the card, there are many scammers that will try to get money out of you but you can get the card for free! Please note the website is still being updated so there are still mentions of EHIC but that will be updated to GHIC in due course!
Remember mateys, it is not a substitute for travel insurance which you still need to have to cover you for a number of other reasons including holiday cancellation, mountain rescue and much more depending on the policy!
