Over the weekend, Spain's prime minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the country will reopen its border to foreign tourists from July, with no quarantine needed.
Spain receives more than 80 million visitors a year, and this is why efforts are being made to ensure the safety of both tourists and the local Spanish population in the most visited places: "We will guarantee that tourists will not take any risks and will not take us no risk," stressed the Prime Minister.
Spanish tourism will now have two new points of reference: environmental sustainability and health security. Sánchez government is working on bilateral agreements with European countries that normally bring more visitors to Spain, and therefore first of all with Great Britain, Germany, France and Italy, for the creation of real "tourist corridors".
Sun, sea, sand and safety
Spain expects a gradual return of tourism in the light of the announcement. Canary Islands are already underway rolling out new social distancing rules, promising "sun, sea, sand, safety".
The new precautions include sunbeds moved apart and partitions at buffet breakfasts, as well as apps that warn of crowded beaches, with talks of segregating beachgoers by age and hire extra security guards enforcing the 2 metre rule.
These are great news, and finally we are beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Greece and Egypt have also announced that they are reopening.
No quarantine in Spain, but self-isolation in the UK
Although no quarantine is needed when arriving in Spain, the new 14-day quarantine to be imposed from 8 June on anyone – including British nationals – returning to the UK from abroad, is putting a dampener on things and will put many people off from travelling altogether.
Having said that, we still like to keep an optimistic stance as news are changing fast in a day and age of Covid-19, and we are keeping a close eye on the developments.
