On board with... that’s the name of our brand-new series of interviews with our in-house travel experts.
Today we interviewed Vittoria Belogi, pirate name Wendy, one of our deal hunters. She talks us through her passion for languages and how travel changed her life!
Read her best tips and how it all got started below
Hi! Tell us a little about you!
Ahoy pirates! My name is Vittoria Belogi (my pirate name is Wendy, the character from Peter Pan), I’m 26 years old and I was born in Senigallia, Italy, where I also grew up.
I have lived and worked in Berlin for 2 years. Don’t ask me how I ended up here as I much prefer warmer Latin countries!
I studied Spanish and Portuguese in Bologna (Emilia-Romagna), but I didn’t spend much time there: as soon as I could, I took any opportunity to pack my bag and leave, unifying my passion for travel and languages.
I spent my second year of University in Portugal, and the third one in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
I went back to Bologna to get my degree, just to go immediately to Barcelona, where I taught Italian as a foreign language for nearly a year.
Berlin arrived in my life like love at first sight - unexpected and immediate - and I’m now so in love with the city that I cannot even imagine living somewhere else in the future.
How did you become a travel deal hunter at HolidayPirates?
I still remember the day I saw the advert online.
The Italian team of PiratinViaggio (the Italian page of HolidayPirates) was looking for a Junior Editor. My friend already worked there so I asked for some help and advice and sent off my cv immediately. I had to get that job!
I wrote a very long and passionate cover letter and, as you can see, it worked out.
What do you like most about your job?
A better question would be: “what DON’T you like about your job?!” I get to write about amazing places and learn how to travel and stay there in the most cost-effective ways.
On top of that, I work with incredible people who teach me how to grow professionally, who support me and push me to give the best I can, every day. It’s super stimulating!
What’s your definition of a good deal?
Spending as little as possible for a very high quality offer: it could flights to a hard-to-reach destination or perhaps a package that is usually very expensive for a great price. Maybe even staying at a hotel for less than the cost of a pizza!
I still remember when my colleague Hook (also from Peter Pan) published a flight deal to São Paulo in Brazil for 84 Euros!!! This is HolidayPirates for me.
How has travel changed your life?
I had the huge privilege to be able to go and study abroad, first in Portugal and then in Brazil. In Rio de Janeiro I lived in Copacabana, the in Leblon, and in the favela of Vidigal, right on the top of Morro Sois Irmãos.
I lived at such a high altitude that sometimes the clouds were under my roof. I also had a wonderful hammock from which I could look at the Ipanema beach while having breakfast.
My windows had no glass and often I had no running water - I’ve never been so happy in my whole life!
Your company offers the digital nomad lifestyle to all staff: where do you plan to work from?
In general, in a world without Covid-19, I would likely already be in Brazil or on some idyllic beach in southeast Asia, working by the sea, with my feet in the water.
Now, with the times we are in, I can at least spend much more time with my family in Italy, something that didn’t happen to me even when I was at University nearby. But let’s be clear: remote working in Bali is just on hold!
