The 'city that never sleeps' has it's fair share of movie filming locations, however, there are a set of stairs that have been blowing up Instagram feeds worldwide recently.

Made famous in the scene where Arthur Fleck (played by Joaquin Phoenix) dances down a particularly steep set of steps, donning a stand-out red suit and the iconic face makeup, the Joker facade is born. The previously mundane spot has been named by internet fans as the Joker Stairs and has become an internet sensation since the film’s release - even being named as such on Google Maps. The now iconic steps lay between Shakespeare and Anderson Avenues in the Bronx. Since the Joker’s screening, Instagram fans and movie buffs alike have flocked in their droves to the newly recognisable spot to get snapping and watch the likes roll in.

However, locals have been left asking “What’s so funny?” to those who are venturing into the Bronx neighbourhood, located half a mile up the road from the Yankee Stadium, just to get that perfect Insta snap. Many residents are commenting on the movement as the ‘worst in meme tourism’, as fans of the film are visiting for photos alone, and not taking in the culture of the area. Locals are pleading with visitors to take some time in the neighbourhood and visit some of the local eateries and shops. Money aside, those who live in the area are experiencing daily inconvenience caused by many a selfie stick being waved in the air. Safety is also becoming an issue as the alley, in which the stairs lie, is known for petty theft due to its poor lighting at night, however, tourists simply wish to recreate certain stills from the film, despite the warnings.

Lets know what you think. Is this a harmless photo opportunity or should travellers consider the location and locals before flocking to the next ‘trending’ location?

New York has loads more to offer than just an Instagram snap, whether you’re looking for flights or packages to the Big Apple, we’ve got you covered!
