In between frantically stocking up on Easter eggs and getting unreasonably excited by the thought of the four day weekend, on board HMS HolidayPirates we've been thinking about Easter inspired travel adventures to inspire you to do something beyond the traditional easter egg hunt! It might not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of Easter but Japan offers a crazy but speggtactular option for an Easter themed trip - Okunoshima.
For decades this small island off the Japanese coast has been a destination for bunny lovers from all across Japan who come to visit what has become known as bunny island for its huge population of the furry carrot munchers!
No one quite knows what has caused the explosion in the rabbit population on Okunoshima, some theories lead back to wartime experiments with poison gas but according to a former director of a museum on the island the current population of rabbits originated when a number were deliberately set free on the island during its conversion to a park in 1945. The rabbits of Okunoshima have it pretty good, hunting the rabbits is prohibited and no dogs or cats are allowed onto the island!
The island is only accessible by ferry from the coastal city of Tadanoumi, the journey takes around 15 minutes but don't let the short journey time lull you into a false sense of security, the rabbits will mob you as soon as you set foot on shore! The rabbits have learnt to expect food from tourists so if you've not stocked up with veggies before boarding you're set to disappoint them. The bunnies are all quite friendly and as long as you've brought some food they'll happily let you pet them! If you thought we were exaggerating when we said that the rabbits will mob you then take a look at this:
The island is also an incredible place to admire the famous Sakura or cherry blossom. If you pick your season correctly you can admire the beautiful colours of cherry blossom whilst making friends with some of Okunoshima's furry residents!
How to get there
Okunoshima isn't the easiest place in the world to get to but flying to either Hiroshima, Osaka or Fukuoka is the best bet - you can get single stop flights from the UK to both airports but Fukuoka and Osaka tend to be the cheaper of the two. From Fukuoka and Osaka it takes about 4.5 hours to reach the island. Return flights to Osaka can be found from around £390pp.
