Pirates, the new year is the perfect time to get away for that big adventure you've been waiting for... new beginnings and all that.

Japan is a slightly more expensive destination, but we've found some decently priced return flights from London to Tokyo so you'll have more money to spend when you get there. You'll set off towards the end of January (gives you a bit of time to pack after the craziness of the festive season) and return at the end of February, spending 5 weeks exploring this ultimate bucket-list destination.

Since this will be Japanese winter, it'll be a bit chilly, but you could do some epic skiing/snowboarding as well as doing the typical tourist places such as Kyoto, Hiroshima, Nara, Osaka and Hokkaido.

Take a look at our Japan travel guide, written by our very own pirate, to make sure you don't miss the best bits of this diverse country.

We've put together some great value flight and hotel options, to get you started with your epic trip.

Great for solo travellers

Details

Flights:

Cheapest:

The first option is to fly from London Gatwick to Tokyo with Air China from £461 return. You'll have a stop in Shanghai, but since the direct option is almost double the price, we don't think you'll turn your nose up at one small layover each way.

Example date: 25 January - 28 February, 2024

Direct:

If you really can't stand the idea of a layover and have a spare £400 lying about to spend on direct flights, then these are the cheapest direct flights we found.

Example date: 24 January - 28 February, 2024

Other Options

Hotel options for in Tokyo:

Accommodation options for Japan are known for being a bit of a budget-breaker, but we've found some options for the start and end of your trip, no matter what your budget.

We have to say, Toyko seems to be the best place for all budgets, with some (not many) cheaper options and lots on the more luxurious side of the scale too.

For budget travellers, we found this capsule pod in Tokyo from £11 on Trivago - that's cheaper than most main meals in London restaurants! You can check Hostelworld, but most hostels are more than double this on there for a dorm. This is the cheapest place to stay we could find in Tokyo, but not to fear as it's got good reviews too.

Example dates: 29 January, 2024

If you're looking for somewhere more glam to start your trip, try this 4-star hotel instead. It's still reasonably priced for a well-rated hotel and once you look at 5-stars, it jumps up to minimum £200, so this seems like a great deal.

Example date: 29 January, 2024

Additional Information

We might be Pirates, but we’re an honest bunch. We check all our deals when we review them to make sure everything is available. Here’s the catch: with deals this hot, things change quickly: flight prices fluctuate, hotel rooms sell out, currencies yo-yo. Mainly, demand for the best deals means the lowest prices don’t last long. But, if you’ve missed out this time, don’t worry: we’re working on more great offers.
