How to book a cheap hotel

If you're still looking for a better deal, we've rounded up all our own favourite tips and tricks that we use to find cheap hotel deals. From tips about loyalty programmes to travelling out of season, you'll find these and more below.

How do I choose the right cheap hotel?

Even though there are any number of personal requirements at play here, choosing the right hotel usually boils down to three factors.

📍 Location: Unless you're really short on time and want to stay central, you'll find that hotels will nearly always be cheaper if you're willing to look beyond the city centre or a bit further away from the beach. It all depends on what you'd like to do while you're on holiday.

🏊 Amenities: Decide which amenities are must-haves and which ones you can do without. If you're on a beach holiday, beachfront access will be non-negotiable. A spa getaway with friends? Make sure that your hotel offers spa treatments and packages.

🤑 Price: If finding a bargain is your ultimate goal, then this is the most important factor of all. Thankfully, if you're willing to be flexible in terms of dates and the destination, you can definitely find something within your price range.

Tips for booking a cheap hotel

  1. Be thorough: Search for deals using several different OTAs (online travel agencies); this ensures that you can do a proper price comparison for the available cheap hotels at your destination.

  2. Sign up to hotel loyalty programmes: Many hotel groups have their own loyalty programmes. Most are free to join and give you access to benefits like discounts and members-only rates.

  3. Search for coupon codes: Google is your friend. Enter the name of the OTA you want to book with, followed by “discount code”, “promo code” or “coupon code”.

  4. Be the first to hear of hotel sales: If you have a favourite hotel group or property, sign up to their newsletter and follow their social media accounts to make sure that you hear about new sales.

  5. Book out of season: It may be tempting to only consider a summer holiday, but travelling out of season guarantees that your hotel price will be much, much cheaper.

  6. Use air miles: You may not yet be aware of it, but you can choose to use your airline miles for booking hotels too.
