Eeeeeek, pirates! We've stumbled upon what must be one of the most disturbing places in the world; La Isla De Las Muñecas, or Isola delle Bambole.

Not far from Mexico City, on what was once the Xochimilco Lake, there is an island populated entirely by discarded dolls.

But if you're thinking about the sweet, refined, and elegant friends of young girls everywhere, this is not the place. Isla De Las Muñecas is full of mutilated dolls, without eyes, hair, faded from the sun, or even beheaded. Now a tourist attraction, it's one scary sight for those brave enough to visit.

It is said that the farmer Julian Santana moved to the island in the 1950s to live as a hermit. One day he found the body of a child drowned in the canal, and hung the doll found next to the child to a tree to ward off evil spirits.

Soon, other dolls followed, becoming something of a project for Santana as he lived his years on the island.

In a macabre twist of fate, he too drowned in the same canal where he found the girl all those years ago.

But is it all reality or fantasy? Many claim that the story isn't true - just a figment of the imagination from a sick fisherman. But those who have visited the island are rattled by the highly unsettling atmosphere, particularly at night when every noise and gust of wind makes the dolls all the more macabre.

From there, take a ferry from Embarcadero Cuemanco or Embaradero Fernando Celada, a journey of around two hours. Don't forget to bring your own creepy dolls!
