A new way to discover Italy by rail & road

A new coach and train service is about to make travelling around Italy simpler. Good news: it's also great value

Italotreno is a train company that provides high-speed travel in Italy for super prices.

We're big fans. We've written a few times about how to use their network to visit Italy on the cheap (check out our ultimate Italian train trip and our top Italian hidden gems you can discover by train).

The good news is their service is getting even better. Italotreno has recently acquired the coach company Itabus. The two connected networks make travelling from Italy's main cities to authentic regional towns and villages a lot easier.

It allows you to hop on a low-cost flight from the UK and extend your journey to include parts of Italy you might have not considered visiting before. Best of all, prices are great value. That's something we, pirates, can get behind.

You can book tickets for the new combined service here. Here are some of the trips you can take with Italotreno and Itabus.

Dive into Sicily

The Italian island is an absolute stunner. The new Italotreno and Itabus connections make travelling to Palermo, Cefalù, Milazzo, Giardini Naxos, Taormina (pictured), Catania, Enna and Caltanissetta a lot easier.

Here are some of the cheapest prices we found:

  • Rome to Taormina from 21.90€

  • Florence to Giardini Naxos from 32.90€

  • Milan to Palermo from 51.90€

Check out Puglia

Puglia hasn't yet got the profile of Tuscany or Veneto in the UK. But it's just as beautiful. The combined Italotreno and Itabus network is a chance to visit the beautiful villages of Polignano a Mare (pictured) and Nardò, as well as the cracking beaches of Porto Cesareo and Gallipoli.

Here are some of the cheapest prices we found:

  • Rome to Gallipoli from 25.90€

  • Milan to Nardò from 38.90€

  • Florence to Polignano a Mare from €52.90

Explore the Sorrentine Peninsula

The Sorrentine Peninsula and Bay of Naples have some fantastic places to visit. With Italotreno and Itabus, you can easily travel to Sorrento and Pompeii (pictured).

Here are some of the cheapest prices we found:

  • Rome to Sorrento from 25.90€

  • Florence to Sorrento from £51.90€

  • Milan to Pompeii from 52.90€

About Itabus

Itabus coaches have free 4/5G Wi-Fi connection, USB and power outlets. They also feature reclinable seats with adjustable double armrests, footrests, a side table and light.

How to book

The prices above are for ItaloTreno’s eXtra MAGIC tickets, which are the cheapest but non-changeable and non-refundable. We found plenty of availability at the lowest prices. But you might need to be flexible with the day and time of travel to get the best price.

ItaloTreno offer discounts of up to 70% to young people, families, friends and older travellers. But these discounts apply to Flex tickets, which are more expensive.

Flex tickets can be changed up to three minutes before departures and are partially refundable. If you like flexibility, this might be the better option but may cost more.

You can join the Italo Più loyalty program for 5% off your first ticket.
