Six UK airports were operational with 'Next Generation Security Checkpoints (NGSC)', meaning that because of the high-tech CT scanners, the 100ml liquid restrictions for hand luggage had recently been scrapped. But now, due to unforseen technical issues, we're back to square one. What a liberty!
A deadline of late June was set for airports to install these new scanners. London City, Teesside, Newcastle, Leeds-Bradford, Aberdeen and Southend had complied on time and dropped the old liquids rules, however some were unable to make the changes in time, including; Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester. Reasons varied from construction issues to supply chain problems.
But why have they reverted back to the old rules?
The European Commission said this wasn't "in response to any new threat but addresses a temporary technical issue" with the new generation of scanners. It said it was taking the action "in alignment with the EU’s international partners", and that "swift technical solutions" would be developed. The UK government previously said the systems needed improving after new information came to light.
Fair enough we guess, but the UK airports that had met the deadline must be unhappy with this sudden change.
What do you think of this? We had started to get used to not worrying about liquid bags etc, so this feels like a step in the wrong direction.
