Late November into early December is one of the best windows to go. The summer heat has cleared out, days sit around 18 to 24C, skies are mostly dry and the humidity finally drops, so you can spend hours on your feet in the Old Quarter without wilting. The route runs via China Southern's hub in Guangzhou rather than direct, so factor in a layover on each leg. Base yourself in the Old Quarter and you are walking distance from Bach Ma Temple, Saint Joseph's Cathedral and the 36 guild streets, where every lane once specialised in a single trade and many still sell it today. Ngoc Son Temple, sitting on its little island in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake and reached by the red Huc Bridge, scores 4.1/5 on TripAdvisor and makes a good first stop.
