What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is the ultimate holiday for shopaholics, featuring special discounts and sales at many participating stores. Black Friday marks the start of the Christmas shopping season and more and more stores have joined in on the shopping frenzy. You can find great sales in many shops, and even more online heading into Cyber Monday, which falls on the Monday after Black Friday.

When is Black Friday?

Black Friday always falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a US holiday that is celebrated on the last Thursday in November, so Black Friday is always on the last Friday in November. Many Americans will head to the shops right after their Thanksgiving celebrations have ended to wait in line for the midnight openings! This year, Black Friday is on 29th November!

Here are the exact dates for the next few years of Black Fridays:

2025: November 28th

2026: November 27th

How did Black Friday start?

The shopping spree madness has its origins in the US as early as the 1930s. The official name, however, has only been around since the 1960s. Many people use this Friday as a bridge day between Thanksgiving and the weekend, extending the holiday into a long weekend spent with family. Black Friday’s popularity can likely be traced back to this trend, with shops taking advantage of this “extra” holiday day to get a head start on Christmas sales.

In the UK, on the other hand, Black Friday only started in earnest in 2013.
