📍 The Ardennes: nature on your doorstep
The Ardennes are known for their thickly wooded hills, steep limestone cliffs and winding river valleys. Late summer is ideal for outdoor adventures – hiking, cycling or kayaking. Come autumn, the forests around the Meuse turn into a spectacular blaze of reds and golds, perfect for a relaxing escape from everyday life. The Meuse Valley is especially worth a visit and is less than an hour's drive away.
Absolute must-sees in the area
- Dinant – Gateway to the Ardennes: Less than 45 minutes away, you'll find the world-famous Dinant. The citadel sits dramatically on a rock above the town, with brilliant views over the Meuse Valley. The city's landmark is the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame. It's worth a visit for the food and drink too: head to Maison Leffe to try famous Belgian beers or tuck into a Flamiche (a hearty Wallonian cheese tart).
- Château de Walzin: One of the most spectacular castles in Belgium! It perches on a 50-metre-high rocky outcrop right on a bend of the River Lesse. The castle itself is privately owned, but you can walk along the riverbank or take a kayak trip on the Lesse.
- More things to do nearby: Your accommodation sits right in the middle of the Ardennes, so you can reach countless highlights in no time. Think the water gardens of Annevoie, Château de Bioul, the Furfooz nature reserve or the caves of Han-sur-Lesse. On a rainy day, the interactive Euro Space Centre (about 15 minutes away) is well worth a visit, as is the charming village of Redu – full of secondhand bookshops and cosy cafés.
