Pirates, it’s no secret that I’m a huge movie buff, always looking for ways to bring a little cinematic flair to our travel world. So, you can imagine my excitement spotting this Airbnb experience! As a die-hard fan of the original Gladiator (and eagerly waiting for the sequel!), this experience is a dream come true: spend a day as a gladiator and battle it out in Rome’s iconic Colosseum!

For the first time in nearly 2,000 years, the Colosseum is reclaiming its original role, welcoming brave souls eager to seek glory as gladiators in the arena! This rare experience offers a journey back in time, where you’ll step into the life of a gladiator and face the thrill of battle in one of history’s most iconic sites.

Starting November 27, 2024, you can pledge your interest in this exclusive event. Sixteen warriors (eight individuals and their guests) will be chosen to embark on this epic adventure in May 2025.

What to Expect During Your Stay:

• Epic Entry: A wealthy patron will meet you at the Colosseum after sunset, leading you inside to witness the arena aglow with candlelight—a sight rarely seen.

• Explore the Hypogeum: Descend into the underground chambers where gladiators once prepared for battle. Here, you’ll select armor that matches your gladiator persona, whether as a murmillo, thraex, provocator, retiarius, or contrarete. Your choice will shape your path.

• Walk the Paths of Gladiators: Walk the maze-like corridors of the Colosseum, retracing the steps of Maximus and countless other warriors who faced their fate here.

• Watch and Learn: Observe seasoned gladiators in combat, absorbing the sounds of clashing swords and shields.

• Feast Like a Gladiator: Enjoy gladiator-worthy fare, including grapes, pomegranates, almonds, and walnuts. Remember, indulgence is a luxury you can’t afford—stay sharp for the battle.

• Face-Off in Combat Training: Under the supervision of a “summa rudis” (referee), put your combat skills to the test.

This experience is part of Airbnb’s mission to rejuvenate European heritage tourism. Airbnb has pledged over $10 million to support cultural preservation, including ongoing restoration at the Colosseum.
