Built at the beginning of the 20th century between the Gaitanejo and El Chorro waterfalls, the Caminito del Rey trail facilitated the transport of materials, granting workers from the hydroelectric plant safe passage. It was inaugurated in 1921 by King Alfonso XIII, hence its name "Caminito del Rey," meaning "little path of the king".
The Caminito del Rey is a 5 mile route located in the region of Malaga in Andalucia. It was once considered one of the most dangerous trails in the world, but it is now secure and has been developed to make it more accessible.
Surrounded by sheer cliffs of rock, canyons and a large valley, the trail hugs the cliff side with footbridges built more than 328 feet high above an incredible blue river.
This one-way hike starts in the town of Ardales and finishes in the town of Álora. A shuttle bus will take you back to the starting car park once the hike is completed. Be careful to take this information into account when planning the distances and times for your outing to the Caminito del Rey.
If you wish to arrive by train, you will need to take the shuttle on arrival at El Chorro-Caminito del Rey station to the northern access point to start the hike. On the way back, this time you will be in the right place to take the train.
At the starting point of the hike, which is at the checkpoint, the on-site staff will make sure that you are wearing shoes suitable for the hike and will equip you with protective helmets.
Please note, a large part of the route is over dizzying footbridges, although it is not necessary to be an athlete to take the walk, access is not recommended for people suffering from vertigo.
