Exciting news coming out of Malta! According to a press release from the Malta Tourism Authority, the island nation is set to introduce a scheme to pay holidaymakers for visiting this summer! The scheme aims to kick start the tourism industry - which is so important to the country's economy - in the wake of a difficult year for sunny southern European destinations as a result of the pandemic.

Tourists could receive up to €200 if they chose Malta this year!

This is how the proposal will work: hotels that want to take part will apply to the tourist board in Malta. The governments will then pay a set sum for each booking depending on the star rating of the hotel, which the hotel itself will then double. This will result in tourists receiving the following sums per person:

  • 5-star hotel: €200 pp

  • 4-star hotel: €150 pp

  • 3-star hotel: €100 pp

Holiday makers who book a stay on the island of Gozo will receive an extra 10% of the above values.

As the government has set aside a budget of €3.5 million at least 35,000 tourists will be able to benefit from the scheme!

One important condition to mention is that that this will not apply to packages but rather only stays booked directly with the hotel. Also worth noting is that the money will not be paid out in cash but rather put towards the cost of a hotel stay, food and drink as well as additional services offered by hotels such as spas.

We think this is a great idea to revitalise the tourism industry and could give Malta an edge in the inevitable competition to attract tourists to Mediterranean destinations this year.

British tourists are able to freely enter the country with a PCR test!
