Why go to Milan? The fashion capital of Italy doesn't quite get the amount of love Rome and Venice do, but it's a hell of a city. First, there's the fashion stuff: Versace, Armani and many more fashion houses were born in Milan. And if you're not into that, you can see some cracking works of art, including Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper.

Still not convinced? One word: aperitivo. Milan LOVES its aperitivo. Find yourself a welcoming bar and while away an evening with a few negronis and nibbles.

This is a DIY deal, so you'll need to buy flights and hotel separately. We've assumed you're travelling with someone and sharing a room. If you're going solo, it'll cost more.

• Flights: we've found a variety of return combos in March for £17-£20 return on Kayak (some combos fly into Milan Malpensa and out of Milan Bergamo, so don't go to the wrong airport – we've warned you.)

• Hotel: we've considered a few options and settled on the B&B Hotel Milan San Siro. It's not quite a central hotel, but near enough that it's not a problem. Plus, it's got good reviews (4/5 on Tripadvisor; 8.3/10 on Trivago) and is very competitively priced

• Cheapest date: 23.03 – 25.03
