As of today (19 March 2021), Portugal is no longer on the UK's travel Red List meaning returning visitors will no longer have to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days but can self-isolate at home instead.

This includes the Portuguese islands of Madeira and the Azores.

In further positive news, Portugal has confirmed that UK visitors will be welcome if they can provide proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test once UK holidaymakers can travel again.

Portugal’s secretary of state for tourism Rita Marques told the BBC Today programme: “We hope to welcome all British holidaymakers from 17 May.

“Holidaymakers can present to Portuguese authorities a certification that testifies they are vaccinated or have immunisation to the virus of they have a negative Covid test. It will be a very straightforward process.”

This news follows other countries, including Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and Spain, that have also laid out plans to reopen to British tourists as soon as they are able to travel.

17 May is the earliest date that international leisure travel may be possible again but this is subject to change.
