Pirates, if you love strawberries just like we do, check out Karl's Erdbeerhof - a working strawberry farm, rustic farmers market and mini theme park all in one, with six locations in the north-east of Germany. One of them easily accessible just outside of Berlin.

On the farm, you can visit one of the manufactories and see how sweets are made, hopp onto a strawberry-themed ride, slide down a slide in a potato sack, paint ceramics, encounter animals and more.

Entry to Karl's is free, small fees apply to certain rides, though. So, if you bring the kids, get a day ticket at the reasonable amount of 12 € per person, roughly Β£10.

Details

Karl’s was named after grandpa Karl who founded the farm which is still managed by the family, now in the third generation. The company grew into a strawberry empire and they're selling everything strawberry-flavoured you can imagine: strawberry beer, strawberry ice cream, strawberry prosecco, strawberry gummi bears, ...!

There are several manufactories you can visit, one of them shows kids and grown-ups how sweets are made. You can also learn to make your own jam, soap or bread.

Rides are strawberry and farm-themed. There are mazes in the summer and a Christmas market in the winter.

Karl's aims for organic produce, biodiversity and waste prevention. They run an upcycling hotel in the north of Germany if you fancy staying nearby an adventure farm. There's also an ice hotel, you can book a room at during the winter!

Other Options

If you fancy visiting one of the adventure farms, we've found flights to Berlin from Β£20* per person for a long weekend in January. Fly out Friday, 14 January, return Sunday, 16 January 2022:

There's a train connection from Berlin main station to Elstal (the closest of Karl's Erdbeer Hof adventure farms) with Deutsche Bahn. From Elstal station, there's a bus you can take. All in all, this takes approximately an hour and costs under 10 € per person.

There's a B&B, a short taxi ride away (approx. 15 minutes' drive). We've found prices from Β£112* for 2 nights for a room (based on 2 sharing). You can add breakfast for 9 € per person per day.
