If you already know your way around Vienna a bit, you'll know that various Christmas markets are set up in the city centre at the most famous sights such as the City Hall, St Charles' Church, St Stephen's Cathedral, Belvedere Palace and Schönbrunn Palace.
We have therefore picked out a few cool tips to give you some inspiration for your stay:
Christmas market at Schönbrunn Palace:
This tip is already obvious - as your accommodation is not far from the palace, a visit to the Schönbrunn Christmas market is a particularly good idea. With a short walk of about 20 minutes, you are already there and can treat yourself to a mulled wine in front of the royal ambience 👑.
Christmas village at the old AKH: Every year, the park of the former Vienna Hospital (now Unicampus) in the 9th district turns into a cosy Christmas village full of mulled wine 🍷, gingerbread and other delicacies. The park is basically the inner courtyard of the old building complex, which means that there is virtually no street noise and makes the atmosphere all the more cosy. It also makes the location a little more hidden.
Christmas market on Spittelberg (Bianka's absolute favourite 😉): The Christmas market near the Museumsquartier is actually very centrally located and probably already known to some, but we think it's still worth a mention because the flair is distinctly unique. The entire Christkindlmarkt stretches over several small alleys in the 7th district and gives the whole thing a particularly festive atmosphere 🥰. If you're already in the area, a nightcap in one of the cosy bars and restaurants, such as the Ammerlingbeisl, is a good idea.
Christmas market on Rathausplatz: Clearly not an insider tip, but definitely a must-go. After all, why miss this iconic place? The Christmas market offers many different attractions: various mulled wine and punch stands, culinary delights, Ferris wheel, a fabulously decorated park and an ice skating rink.
And now comes the coolest part! For ice skating, in addition to an open area in the park, the winding paths are also transformed into an ice rink! The absolute highlight for us 🤩!
Alternative attraction after Christmas: But those who can't make it to Vienna at Christmas time needn't be sad. The ice rink ⛸ on Rathausplatz will be expanded from mid-January and opened as the Vienna Ice Dream ❄️. This means that a two-storey ice rink will be built in front of the town hall and, in addition, with the entire left side of the park, it will make a pure dream come true for ice skating fans.
