Our 10 top tips

1. Due to the amount of business travellers in London, you can sometimes get weekend dates cheaper than midweek.

2. Stay out of central London to keep costs down, London has amazing public transport, so you won't miss out as you can reach central London in no time.

3. Book without breakfast if the rate is a lot higher, many times it will be cheaper to buy your breakfast at a café or bakery than paying for it in your hotel rate.

4. Leave as late as possible on the last day instead of paying for another night in the hotel and leaving early, the hotel will look after your bags, or you can use a left-luggage service such as Stasher.

5. Book as far in advance as you can to get the best rates, use free cancellation options where you can if you are not 100% sure of your dates. There are also many options where you don't need to pay until you stay.

6. Sign up to email lists to receive information on sales or special rates available.

7. You will be able to get the best rates if you are flexible with your dates. Discount sites such as Secret Escapes, Voyage Privé and sometimes Wowcher will have calendar views where you can see the cheapest prices at a glance.

8. Booking with the hotel website direct can sometimes give you certain perks, such as a members-only rate, or you may prefer to use a booking agent and join/use their rewards schemes, you can get money off with Booking.com and a free night once you stay 10 with Hotels.com.

9. To keep the costs down of eating out, you can book an apartment or an aparthotel, and then you have the option of cooking your own meals during your stay.

10. Another way to keep costs down, could be to stay in a hostel, and you can always book a private room if you don't want to share with others.
