British Airways is launching a new non-stop route from London, meaning the American Midwest is closer than ever. One-stop flights? Sure, maybe a few quid cheaper… but why faff about when you can go direct?

We’ve paired the direct flights with a car rental road trip that hits all the highlights: St. Louis → Route 66 to Springfield → Kansas City → the Ozarks, and ends with a woodland hideaway complete with hot tub. All of this could be yours for around £918 for a 6-night/7-day trip (just book flights, car, and hotels separately).

Day 1 – 22 April: Arrive in St. Louis

• Land 7:30pm, head straight to your hotel in St. Louis city centre.

Day 2 – 23 April: Explore St. Louis → Pick up car → Drive to Springfield

• Spend the morning exploring St. Louis: Gateway Arch, City Museum, or a walk in Forest Park.

• Afternoon: Pick up car and start driving toward Springfield, Illinois (approx. 3.5 hours)

Have a play with pick-up times and the type of car you're looking for. We've gone for a SUV from £255 for 5 days, but there are cheaper/smaller options available.

Set off for Springfield, Missouri, on the Historic Route 66, and if you have time to explore, then check out:
