Summer Trends 2023

We’ve conducted another of our world famous surveys! This time, we’ve been exploring summer holiday trends and our travel-savvy users once again helped us out. We’ve selected a few of the particularly interesting results to show off here.

Vitamin Sea

First up, we’ve petitioned pirates across Europe to share which ‘team’ they feel they belong to when asked to choose from 3 options; Cities, Oceans or Mountains. A staggering 83% of Germans voted themselves into Team Vitamin Sea. France was close behind, with 71% saying the same thing.

The call of the ocean seems to be particularly compelling to our German and French users but it’s not hard to understand why. A good beach is hard to beat and deals are plentiful.

Holiday deal breakers

Our next survey highlighted more practical matters. We asked about things we know to be near and dear to the hearts of our holidaymakers and what mattered most, from budget to climate.

As you’ll see, the budget did rank as a high priority across the board. It's perhaps not surprising that HolidayPirates users report a healthy cost consciousness. Unusually good value is the name of the game after all.

It’s still abundantly clear though, it boils down to location location location. Whether it's a destination you’ve dreamt of all your life, or you were inspired by something we posted, it seems that beyond budget, weather and travel companions, the question of “where?” reigns supreme in holiday decision making.

Early birds

We asked about the time frame of the booking process for summer holidays and found some interesting differences between our international participants.

Our German respondents tend to plan more in advance. Meanwhile, the UK, Italian and French cohorts were our last-minute-merchants. It’s safe to say the average advance booking time lies between 1- 3 months ahead of the holiday so no surprises there but if you are one of our outliers, don’t despair, as there are always great last minute deals to be found.

Home is where the start is

We also asked about the range of our users' holidays, in particular who would stay in their home country, travel abroad within Europe, or choose to roam further afield.

The majority of respondents reported they plan to travel outside their home country, but within Europe. This is unsurprising with everything that the continent has to offer. It’s also interesting to note we can still observe the tendency to enjoy a 'staycation' remains, even now, when travel constraints are lifted.
