The fountain is located on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
From time immemorial, the monks of Irache have welcomed pilgrims on their way with a glass of wine. Many of those who came were very ill, and the wine was used as medicine. The Bodegas Irache fountain is a reminder of this. In the late 1990s, the fountain was officially installed so that pilgrims could help themselves to the wine. You can watch a live feed of the wine tap here.
The fountain has two taps, one for water and one for wine. It is the only wine fountain along the entire Pilgrim's Way. Every day, about 100 litres of young red wine are poured into the fountain to quench the pilgrims' thirst and make their journey easier and more pleasant.

A little history
Bodegas Irache is one of the oldest wineries in Navarre. It was founded in 1891, although in the 10th century the Benedictine monks who lived in the adjacent monastery produced wines in the same area, which were valued as food and medicine for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.
Wines from this land were served at the banquets of the royal family of Navarre, and the monks who lived in the monastery exported them to France and Portugal. A lot has happened over the years and a lot of wine has been produced.

Nearly 200,000 pilgrims pass through here every year.
The history of the Irache vineyard is inextricably linked to the history of the Camino de Santiago. The local wine was produced in the Irache Monastery, a former hospital for pilgrims from the 11th century. Of course, you are all welcome to visit the vineyard and taste the different wines.

We encourage you to go on a pilgrimage. The routes you can take and the landscapes are amazing, and the atmosphere during the walk is unique.
However, if you want to fly directly to the area around Irache, the easiest way is to fly to Bilbao. We find the cheapest flights from London, but you choose the dates and airports that suit you best.
