Sharks have so far been spotted around Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, off the coast of Murcia and off Illa de Arousa in northwestern Spain.

Experts say there is no need to panic. It is wise to know what you should and should not do in case you come face to face with a shark.

What to do if you encounter a shark in the water?

  • Stay calm

  • Stop swimming

  • Stay vertical

  • Keep your distance

  • Keep eye contact

  • Don't turn your back on the shark

  • Don't splash

  • Do not make quick (unexpected) movements

  • Get out of the water very slowly

Sharks are often much more afraid of humans than the other way around. If you follow the tips above, chances are very small that anything will happen.
