Taiwan will pay tourists to visit😱

The diverse little island nation in East Asia wants to pay a premium to tourists, read on as we have summarized all details for you.

Since autumn 2022, no tests or certificates have been required for entry into Taiwan, and everyone can enter the country as normal, regardless of vaccination status. In order to boost tourism quickly, something special has now been considered: travellers should receive a financial bonus as an incentive.

According to plans announced by Chen Chien-jen last Thursday, half a million individual travellers will each receive 5,000 New Taiwan Dollars, equivalent to about 150 euros. Four times as much is planned for 90,000 tour groups.

As Minister of Transport Wang Kwo-tsai announced, the amount should be transmitted digitally as a credit, which can also be used to pay for accommodation, for example.

It is hoped that the measure will increase the number of tourists, which was recently only 7.6 percent of the pre-corona level. The government of Taiwan is expected to announce in the next few days when the program will start and how to apply.

Our assessment: Since the first Corona summer, there have always been exciting promises to help tourism get back on its feet. Unfortunately, some of them were never heard from again. One could now speculate whether the implementation turned out to be more difficult than expected, or whether it was just intended to attract media attention from the outset.
