If you’re planning a trip to Turkey, you may be following recent developments in the region closely. To help you make an informed decision, we’ve summarised the latest guidance from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), alongside insights from travellers currently in destination.
The key takeaway: no travel restrictions for the Turkish Riviera and Mediterranean Coast (Antalya, Belek, Side, Alanya, Kemer) or the Aegean Coast.
Reports from popular holiday destinations indicate that tourism is continuing as normal, with flights operating as scheduled from the UK.
While there have been political demonstrations in some major cities, including Istanbul and Ankara, coastal resort areas remain largely unaffected. The FCDO advises avoiding all demonstrations and large gatherings, and following local news during your stay.
The FCDO does not advise against travel to Turkey’s main resort areas.
Turkey is a large country, and areas subject to stricter travel advice are located far from the main tourist destinations. For example, the regions near the Syrian border, where restrictions apply, are a considerable distance from coastal resorts such as Antalya and Bodrum.
Flights between the UK and Turkey are currently operating as normal. However, as with any period of regional instability, disruption remains possible, particularly for routes involving neighbouring countries.
The FCDO provides region-specific travel advice. Check their website to see the map overview. Here’s how this applies to key destinations:
🟢 No FCDO travel restrictions (check advice before travelling)
Turkish Riviera and Mediterranean Coast (Antalya, Belek, Side, Alanya, Kemer)
Aegean Coast (Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye, Izmir, Kuşadası)
🟡 No restriction on travel, but increased caution is advised
Istanbul and Ankara: the FCDO advises staying alert, monitoring local developments, and avoiding demonstrations
🟡 Advise against all but essential travel
Sirnak and Hakkari provinces
🔴 Advise against all travel
Areas within 10km of the Syrian border
If you’ve booked a package holiday, your rights are protected under the Package Travel Regulations. You may be entitled to a full refund if “unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances” significantly affect your trip.
However, as the FCDO does not currently advise against travel to Turkey’s main tourist destinations, a change of mind alone is unlikely to qualify for a refund. Typically, your rights are triggered only if official advice changes for your specific destination.
If your plans have changed, but official advice remains the same:
Flexible bookings: If you booked a flexible fare, you may be able to amend or cancel your trip, sometimes for a fee
Contact your provider: Some companies may offer changes as a gesture of goodwill, although additional costs may apply
Travel insurance: Standard policies usually cover specific circumstances such as illness, but not a general decision not to travel
