In November, the Maldives became the first country in the world to implement the so-called "tobacco-free generation." Under the new regulations, people born after 1 January 2007, are prohibited from purchasing, possessing, or using tobacco products. The ban also applies to tourists.
The decision, which took effect on November 1st, aims to protect the health of future generations and promote a lifestyle free from addiction. The ban applies to all forms of tobacco and also applies to tourists visiting the islands.
The Maldives has previously banned the import and use of e-cigarettes, and breaking the law can result in hefty fines. This is another example of the country's serious approach to public health. As a Muslim country, the Maldives has long had strict alcohol regulations. Its sale and consumption are completely banned on local islands inhabited by Maldivians.
While this may sound strict, for many travellers it may be good news – the Maldives are becoming a paradise not only for lovers of beaches and peace, but also for those who want to take a break from smoke, the smell of tobacco and loud bars.
