Planning a sunny escape to the Canary Islands? Keep your eyes peeled, Pirates, some new rules have just come into force on the beaches of Gran Canaria 🏝️
The goal? To protect the local environment and make sure tourists and locals can share the space without things getting out of hand. But if you rock up unprepared, you could end up with a fine of up to €2,500 😱
Here’s what you need to know to sunbathe stress-free 👇
These restrictions currently apply to the coastal area of Agaete in Gran Canaria, but heads up – they could be rolled out to other spots across the Canary Islands soon. The rules cover beaches, promenades and general seaside areas.
❌ No sexy business in the sea or on public beaches
Yes, really. No funny business in public or you risk a hefty fine. Keep it PG, Pirates.
🚭 No smoking or vaping
Certain areas are now completely smoke-free. Always check the signs or risk a penalty.
🎶 No loud music in sunbathing zones
If you're planning to bring a speaker, think again. Quiet vibes only — bring headphones instead.
🌂 Traditional parasols are banned
Those big bulky beach umbrellas are now considered unsafe (especially when it’s windy) and take up too much space. Stick to smaller, safer options.
🍳 No beach cooking
Barbecuing or cooking directly on the sand is a no-go. Pack a picnic instead.
🪢 No reserving sunbeds or platforms with your stuff
The ‘towel at dawn’ strategy is officially banned. First come, first served — but only when you’re actually there.
⛺ No camping or beach tents
Spending the night or setting up a full-on beach base camp isn’t allowed anymore.
🚧 Don’t block footpaths or access points
Make sure your gear isn’t in the way of walkways or access to the sea.
🐚 No collecting shells or marine creatures
Even empty shells or anything from rocks and tide pools are off limits. Leave nature where you found it.
Good news: dogs are allowed, but only on a lead and with their human by their side. No off-lead zoomies at the water’s edge, but at least you don’t have to leave your furry mate at home 🐶
The rules are already in place and are being enforced by local authorities. If you get caught breaking them, you could be hit with a fine of up to €2,500 💸
Pirate tip 🏴☠️: Always have a quick look at the signs when you arrive at the beach or ask at the nearest tourist office. It’s a simple way to avoid any trouble and save your euros for ice cream instead.
🕶️ Bring a compact, low-key umbrella: Go for something modern and easy on the eyes (and the wind). Leave the massive beach fortress at home.
🎧 Use headphones for music: Keep the party in your ears, not on the promenade.
🔥 🔥 Skip the beach BBQ: A cheeky sandwich under the umbrella beats a fine for cooking on the sand.
🧴 Take your rubbish with you: And don’t try the old ‘towel at dawn’ trick to reserve your spot. It’s banned now.
🐾 Travelling with a pet?: Bring a lead, water, and some poo bags. Dogs are welcome — but only on a lead and under control.
