Are you one of those people who can't justify spending thousands more pounds on a first-class or even business-class flight, but often struggle to get comfortable in economy and dread those long-haul flights in particular? We've compiled a few tips below to elevate your economy class experience to a first-class feeling.
We recommend considering the purchase of some, if not all, of the following items to make your time in economy far more relaxing:
Foot hammock: If the lack of legroom in economy gets the better of you (and it often does, even for shorter passengers), this small and affordable tool could be a lifesaver. You can easily strap it to the tray table in front of you, and it’s super compact. We’ve found this item on sites like Amazon for as little as £10.
Ear stabilisers: These can help your ears handle the air pressure during take-off and landing, and they also block out some of the noise.
Bluetooth transmitter: Gone are the days when headphones had actual auxiliary cords, and we all know the basic headphones provided on flights are of terrible quality. Consider purchasing a Bluetooth transmitter, which plugs into the aux cord socket of your in-flight entertainment system and acts as a discoverable Bluetooth source for your wireless headphones.
Neck pillow: Probably the most important item to have on your list. Prevent your head from bobbing during the flight and enjoy some restful sleep.
Cosy loungewear: For the utmost comfort on your flight.
Compression socks: To prevent your feet from swelling during the flight.
Dress in layers: Save room in your suitcase by wearing your bulkiest items. You can add or remove layers to suit the temperature on your flight.
Slippers with a plastic or rubber sole: No one, and I mean NO ONE, wants you to take your shoes off during a flight. It’s unpleasant for those who have to share the small, enclosed space with you. Pack a pair of slippers with rubber or plastic soles, so you don’t need to worry about them getting dirty if you use the restroom during the flight.
Rollable flats: Alternatively, to save more bag space, you can purchase rollable flats that pack up compactly. Wear your bulky shoes at the airport to get through security, then change into these flats when you board the flight.
Sheet masks: Helps prevent breakouts during the flight and keeps your skin smooth and hydrated.
Collagen eye masks: Keeps your eyes from looking tired and getting puffy during the flight.
Listerine strips: Keeps your breath fresh and prevents your mouth from going dry.
Hair rollers: Alternatively, bring a soft headband to wrap your hair around for easy styling.
Audiobooks: Consider getting an Audible subscription. This lets you avoid worrying about disrupting your neighbour with the overhead light. You can download books to listen to offline.
Offline messaging: Separated from your travel companion? Download Bridgefy and connect via Bluetooth to anyone within 300 feet of you.
Spotify or other music streaming apps: With apps like Spotify, you can create playlists filled with your favourite songs and download your music ahead of your trip. If you’re not motivated to create a playlist and want more song options, consider downloading your "Discover Weekly" playlist – a Spotify-curated list of new songs based on your preferences.
Download Netflix or other streaming platforms: Many popular streaming platforms, like Netflix and Amazon Prime, allow you to download shows to watch later without internet.
Mini Cocktail Kits: Come in the size of a mint container, could be paired with the alcohol served on board.
Electrolytes: Airplanes with their recycled air tend to be the easiest place to contract a cold. Pack electrolytes in a powdered or tablet form then grab a water on board or at the airport to drop it into. This hopefully help you stay hydrated and provide some vitamins to combat a cold.
Charcuterie in a Bento Box: Pack cheese, crackers, jam, and dried/cured meats to enjoy on board and put them in a bento box for easy access. Alternatively, you can make yourself an adults twist on a Lunchable.
A Good Bar of Chocolate: Chocolate is important. Enough said.
