The German supermarket chain is bringing a whole new experience to Dundonald, Northern Ireland, with its first-ever in-store pub, aiming to create a ‘vibrant atmosphere’ for shoppers at the budget supermarket.
After winning a High Court battle, Lidl is bringing a 45-seat bar to its Dundonald store. Patrons can expect a 45-seat public bar as well as an off-license in their local store, serving draught and bottle beer, wine, cider, and spirits usually stocked on their shelves.
This pub plan has been in the works since 2020, but Lidl had to prove there weren’t enough pubs nearby to meet local licensing laws. The supermarket chain received objections from Philip Russell Ltd, which runs several off licences in the area. Now, with a £410,000 investment approved, the store is gearing up for a major transformation.
So, is it genius or a step too far for Lidl? Either way, we can’t wait to see if shoppers manage to resist the middle aisle four pints in.
