Want to travel with your pet, but don't want to put them in the cargo hold? Currently, only small pets weighing up to 22 pounds (10 kilograms), including their bag, are allowed to travel in the cabin of some airlines, but a new law is set to change this.
The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has announced in a press release that Italian airlines will soon be allowed to transport larger dogs and cats in the cabin. Previously, this was only permitted for small animals in a carrier under the seat.
In the future, larger pets will even be allowed to be transported in the passenger seat, although there are, of course, a few requirements. For example, the animals must be in a suitable transport container and properly secured. The permissible total weight is no longer as rigid as before, as it must not exceed the "maximum permissible weight of an average passenger." This should cover all dogs and cats."
Many pet owners will likely be pleased about this regulation, as transporting pets in the cargo hold is associated with considerable stress and risk. However, we're not sure which Italian airlines will implement this rule, how soon the changes will come and the costs.
ITA Airlines is the Italian airline serving London from Gatwick and London City. They operate flights to Rome and Milan.
