Pirates, this is not a metaphor: Sweden is actually offering five private islands.
No, not to buy them. Not to build a luxury glamping site on them. And especially… not if you’re a billionaire.
The initiative is by Visit Sweden and is called “Your Swedish Island”: a project that aims to redefine the concept of luxury with a Nordic twist. Here, luxury isn’t about showing off, but about silence, nature, and responsible freedom.
And yes, you could officially become the caretaker of an island for a whole year.
Here are the stars of this Scandinavian adventure:
Marsten
Rock, sea, wind, and pure freedom. If the idea is to live a moment out of time, this could be yours.
Medbådan
A rocky gem in the Baltic Sea, wild and minimalist. Perfect if you dream of days among cliffs, salty winds, and endless sunsets.
Flisan
Small, intimate, authentic. Ideal for those who truly want to disconnect from the world and live with the essentials.
Storberget
Dramatic and panoramic: here, the landscape takes center stage. Open views of the horizon and untouched nature.
Tjuvholmen
A name that sounds straight out of a Nordic film, with the vibe of a secret hideaway. Perfect for those who love wild and slightly mysterious islands.
✨ What does it mean to “win” an island?
Spoiler: you won’t become the owner. Instead, you’ll become the official caretaker for one year (with a diploma) and you’ll be able to:
- Camp
- Swim
- Invite friends
- Enjoy the island as your personal retreat
- But you’ll need to respect the local nature and wildlife.
In Sweden, there’s the Allemansrätten, the right of public access: this means others may still visit or cross the island.
Translation: luxury, yes—but shared and responsible.
🎥 How to participate
To apply, you need to:
- Submit a video of up to 60 seconds
- Explain why you deserve your Swedish island
- Share it with the hashtag #YourSwedishIsland
📅 Deadline: April 17, 2026
🏆 Winners will be announced in May
The prize also includes a round-trip for two to Sweden.
It does not include transport to the island itself (kayak, SUP, or boat—arrange your own Nordic-style adventure).
🚫 Who cannot participate?
The contest is open to everyone over 18… except billionaires. Because Visit Sweden’s idea is clear: true luxury isn’t material excess, but simplicity, silence, and freedom in nature. Honestly? Brilliant.
