By now, most Pirates have heard about the annual closure of Maya Bay – yep, the one from famous movie, The Beach 🎥. Every year from 1st August to 1st October, the bay gets a much-needed breather from the crowds to let nature recover.
Now, Thailand’s government is extending that same idea to two more island groups further north: Koh Surin and the Similan Islands. From now on, both archipelagos will close to tourists every year from 16 May to 14 October.
These two island groups are popular for day trips from Phuket and Khao Lak. The good news? That’s the rainy season anyway, so it won’t affect too many holiday plans. But when they reopen, there’ll be a new rule in place:
E-tickets and limited numbers
To visit, you’ll now need to book an e-ticket in advance. It’ll cost a fee and will be linked to your passport number, so no sneaky re-sells. The idea is to limit visitor numbers and manage the impact on the environment.
This new system will apply to six marine national parks across the Krabi and Phang-Nga regions:
Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi
Ao Phang Nga
Than Bok Khorani
Mu Ko Similan
Mu Ko Surin
Mu Ko Lanta
So, if you’re planning a trip to Thailand between now and autumn, it’s worth checking what’s open – and when the e-ticket booking system kicks in.
🏴☠️ Pirate tip: It’s always a good shout to double-check national park access during the rainy season, especially if you’re planning any boat trips.
