Alsace is without question one of the most beautiful regions of France! Colourful half-timbered houses in charming villages between vineyards, festive Christmas markets and beautiful nature, there's something to do in every season. The region is also easy to reach from the UK, within driving distance from Basel and Strasbourg airport. We'll show you the most beautiful places in the region.
The region is perfect for a road trip to explore the different villages. Many of them are very close to each other, so you can easily visit several in one day. We have put together the most beautiful places in Alsace for you, so that you don't have to search for long on your next trip!
I'll start with my personal favorite: Riquewihr.
This magical village served as inspiration for Disney's "Beauty and the Beast". You can get lost exploring the countless alleys and marvel at the colourful half-timbered houses. The small town has around 1,000 inhabitants and is relatively quiet, although it is very popular with tourists, especially during the summer holidays and at Christmas time.
The Christmas market here is one of the most beautiful in the area and highly recommended!
It might not necessarily fall into the “village” category, since over 67,000 people live here, but Colmar should still be on your bucket list!
It is one of the most famous destinations in Alsace & for good reason! Here you can also find beautiful, colourful houses & you feel like you are in a fairytale! The Christmas market in Colmar is one of the most beautiful and festive in the world & you should definitely visit it once in your life!
Another of my personal favorites: Eguisheim. This village, with about 2,000 inhabitants, is a bit quieter & has a very special charm.
The colourful half-timbered houses can also be found here, so you'll find plenty of great photo spots, as well as local restaurants & shops.
A little hidden gem in Alsace! I found this place by chance while on my Alsace road trip - I spontaneously stopped and explored this cute little place and I was so glad I did. Great decorations on the colourful houses and many towers and churches characterise the Kayserberg-Vignoble, which has around 4,500 inhabitants.
Like Colmar, Strasbourg is a city and not a village, but you should definitely plan a stop here if you are in Alsace. It is worth visiting all year round, but especially at Christmas time. Strasbourg has been named the "Christmas capital" and the Christmas markets here leave nothing to be desired. The cathedral is also very special and a must-see - it was the tallest building in the world for a very long time.
Another favorite: Turckheim. I also discovered this place by chance and (luckily) stopped to take a closer look.
Like everywhere in Alsace, you will find colourful houses, beautiful decorations and countless quaint alleyways here too. With around 4,000 inhabitants, Turckheim is also a smaller town that is, compared to others, rather quiet! It is only 2 km from Colmar, so it can be perfectly combined with a visit there!
Last but not least: Ribeauville.
One of the better-known small towns in Alsace, and rightly so! It is said that this town (in addition to Riquewihr) also served as inspiration for Disney's “Beauty and the Beast”. This town is filled with colourful houses, many local shops and great restaurants! A medieval Christmas market is held here every year, which is a very special experience!
