Top Free Things to Do in Budapest
Join one of the free tours to get to know the city; often these tours include the main points of interest and allow you to meet other people traveling. Discover the Central Market, unforgettable thanks to its lively atmosphere, bright colors, and vibrant local culture.
Climb Gellért Hill, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city. This little hill, on the Buda side, also houses the homonymous spas and caves, both of which can be visited. We recommend going there at sunset, to ensure an extra-romantic experience.
Take a moment to pause and reflect in front of the Danube Shoes Monument, a moving tribute to the Jewish victims of WWII. Just a stone's throw from the imposing Hungarian Parliament, this monument remembers all those who were forced to take off their shoes before being executed. We recommend taking a moment to commemorate and reflect on the historical significance of this place.
Stroll on the Chain Bridge, the iconic symbol of the city, as well as an important panoramic spot. Don't miss this walk in the evening, when the city's monuments are spectacularly illuminated.
Explore Margaret Island, an oasis of peace in the heart of the city. Relax, stop for a picnic, or explore the island's parks, gardens, and attractions. While some parts may cost extra, you can visit the Japanese Gardens, Rose Garden, and Franciscan Monastery for free.
Climb to the top of Castle Hill in Buda. Don't let the short walk scare you and get to the top for a breathtaking view of the Pest, then discover the area, where you can find some of Budapest's most famous (rightly!) attractions.
Visit Buda Castle and Fisherman's Bastion Open all day, you can visit the gardens or common areas for free. If, on the other hand, you prefer to visit museums as well, we advise you not to miss the Hungarian National Gallery.
Spend time at the Heroes' Memorial at night when it's spectacularly lit!
Discover the Basilica of San Stefano, famous for its refined and highly detailed architecture. If you decide to visit only the exterior, we recommend going there in the evening, when it's even more interesting thanks to the play of light.
Explore the Jewish Quarter, located in Pest, famous for its complex history and rich culture. Despite being one of the smallest neighborhoods in the city, it's an interesting mix of history and novelty, not to be missed!
Stop by the Ruins Bar (in the Jewish Quarter). This place, once made up of abandoned buildings and warehouses, has now become a group of eclectic bars, with lively and hipster decorations, where you can find different shows and house, techno, or even jazz music! Although the drinks are not free, a good pint still costs less than a $3 equivalence, so we add it to the must-see places!

Despite being a capital, Budapest can be easily explored on foot, or even by bike, thanks to the presence of cycle paths. Consider renting one through the local transport company, BKK.
