Holidays in Iceland - Indulge in a unique natural wonderland

Holidays in Iceland continue to enchant visitors from all over the world with its unique geology and climate, stunning vistas and welcoming locals. Visit the sublime Blue Lagoon thermal pools, hike the mighty glaciers with volcanic views, and party Icelandic-style in the capital of Reykjavik.

What are the best areas to visit in Iceland?

Southwest –This is where most visitors arrive, with the international airport at Keflavik close to the capital of Reykjavik.

South – Another very popular spot for travellers, this is where you'll find the iconic Golden Circle. It's an area containing superb national parks such as Thingvellir and the majestic Gullfoss waterfall.

North – Several charming towns dot the expansive lava fields and offer easy access to more natural beauty, such as puffin and whale watching cruises.

West – Visit the impressive Snæfellsnes mountain range and hike up for stupendous vistas across the region. Deildartunguhver here is the largest hot spring on the continent.

Visit the capital and Blue Lagoon

For culture and history on your Iceland holiday, as well as plenty of opportunity for taking in the glorious local nature, head to Reykjavik. Here you'll find the rocket ship-shaped Hallgrímskirkja cathedral, and you can stroll between the colourfully-painted houses that dot the suburbs. A short bus trip will take you to the Blue Lagoon for a day of pampering and relaxation in a huge natural hot spring. Other ideas for activities include horse riding through the nearby lava fields, and of course checking out the trendy local bars down-town.

Can I see the Northern Lights in Iceland?

Absolutely, this is one of the very best places to catch them. Even in the south of the country, such as Reykjavik, you'll easily find tours to see the magnificent natural pageant of light which is a truly unforgettable experience. The best time of year to visit for this is in the middle of winter, and if you're very keen on seeing them, then staying in the north of the country will give you the best chances. Look out for excursion opportunities for the best spots to watch them.

How is the local climate in Iceland and when should I visit?

It's often said that Iceland and Greenland have their names mixed up, as the natural beauty and mild temperatures on Iceland holidays don't exactly match its frosty-sounding name!

Here's a look at the weather conditions in Reykjavik:

  1. Temperatures are reasonably steady throughout the year with average lows of -3°C and average highs of 13°C. Even in winter, it often stays above freezing.

  2. July and August see the lowest rainfall and highest temperatures

  3. February and March offer a sweet spot of not too cold, but still give a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

  4. Even way up in Húsavík in the north, the temperatures aren't dramatically lower than in the south. Expect lows of -5°C and the same highs of 13°C.
