Details

Australia has had some of the world's strictest border controls during the pandemic. Now, the country has announced that borders will be opening to vaccinated tourists and other visa holders from 21 February 2022.

Who can go and how?

Vaccinated travellers

Double vaccinated travellers can enter Australia. You will need to provide proof of vaccination.

Unvaccinated travellers

Proof of medical exemption is required if you're unvaccinated. You will also have to undergo hotel quarantine if they are granted permission to enter the country.

Visa

Tourists travelling to Australia will have to apply for a tourist visa here.

Arrival caps?

Just something to be aware of, pirates. There are caps on the numbers of passengers coming into Australian airports from overseas. This is to ease pressure on state and territory quarantine facilities.

The Home Affairs Minister said international travellers would "be subject on their arrival here to the relevant state and territory quarantine requirements".

We recommend checking with your airline before you fly out. More information on what you need to travel to Australia can be found on the official websites.

Flights

There are a couple of things you can do to save some money on flights to Australia:

1. Stops: Flights with 2 stops are cheaper than 1 stop or direct flights.

2. Dates: If time is not an issue for you, make sure to look around for the cheapest flights around your selected date. Most airlines will let you click a "flexible" box -- always worth looking at that if you're not bound to strict dates.

3. Destination: When we checked the market, we've noticed Melbourne always came up £100-£200 per ticket cheaper than flying into Sydney (at the moment). So, if you haven't got a specific destination you want to fly into, check the cheapest destination to fly into and plan your trip from there.

4. Airports: Sometimes it's cheaper to depart from one airport in the UK and arrive into another. If you're flexible (and don't park your car at one but take the train to the airport, for example), you can snap up some great rates.

5. Seasons: We do see a slight drop in pricing for June/July dates when it's winter in Australia (still balmy compared to our winter, but could be rainy and feel a bit like Autumn).

4. Timing: We've seen flight prices rise ever since the news has come out. We recommend to book soon in order to get cheap flights.

Flight examples:

Crazy cheap, adventurous (what could go wrong?):

Stansted-Melbourne (1 March - 29 March 2022)

Lufthansa/Quantas option for under £700

London Heathrow - Sydney (29 March - 29 April):
