Thailand's campaign to get tourism back
Ahoy, Pirates! As you already know, the Thai government plans to re-open the island of Phuket to fully vaccinated travellers quarantine-free from 1 July. Now, with 1 July nearing, Thailand proposed a plan to offer hotel rooms on the island for £0.70 per night! Read on to learn more.
Thailand is currently on the amber list. Nationwide, the 7-day incidence is 35 (whereas the UK currently has a weekly incidence rate of 26).
There is a curfew from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., a mask requirement, restrictions on the opening times of shopping centres and restrictions on the distribution of alcohol in restaurants. Of course, with the re-opening of the island on 1 July some of these restrictions are expected to relax.
Proof of complete vaccination (at least 14 days in advance)
Negative PCR test (no older than 72 hours for departure)
International flight to Phuket
Entry registration
International health insurance that also covers Covid-19
Download the tracking app
Covid-19 test upon entry
Note: Even those who have not been vaccinated can still enter, but have to go into a two-week hotel quarantine.
With such restrictions currently in place, just how is Phuket hoping to entice tourists back to its shores?
The Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) has proposed a new 'One Night, One Dollar' campaign, where travellers could book hotels for US$1 or £0.70 per night on hotels that are usually between 1,000 baht - 3,000 baht (£22- £68) per night. Seems like a pretty good deal, Pirates.
While it isn't clear which hotels would participate in this campaign just yet, the TCT president said that around one million hotel room nights would be offered up for booking at US$1 (£0.70).
