🌲 An epic trip including fjords, scenic train journeys, and the chance to see the Northern Lights 🚠 🏞️
From £241 pp
Pirates, we've spotted some very reasonable direct return flights to Bergen in Norway, and so we decided to plan a getaway to this epic destination, including Fjord visits, Xmas markets and festivities, and the best out-of-town spots with a chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Plus, discovering the historic city of Bergen with its cobbled streets, charming wooden houses and stunning lakeside location.
We spotted cheap flights in December and May, so depending on whether you would like to combine your trip with the Christmas markets or opt for the better weather and best time for hiking, you can take your pick.
To take in this stunning region, we recommend spending a few nights out of town, to experience the extraordinary scenery in the area, and this would also provide your best chance of seeing the Northern Lights (during the winter months), due to the dark skies. Although, this is not a guarantee, as the best place to see them is in Northern Norway.
Another experience that should not be missed, is taking a ride on the highest mainline railway in Northern Europe: the scenic rail journey from Bergen to Flåm. This is a great way to get a taste of the fjords. Along the way you pass boathouses and red painted cabins, before climbing to Norway’s craggy, windswept uplands. The final part of the journey takes you down into the Flåm valley and the Sognefjord Fjord, which is the largest and deepest fjord in Norway and looks beyond beautiful. This return trip can be done in one day.
We've put together similar itineraries for both, with slight seasonal variations. 👇
December trip:
Tuesday 05 - Tuesday 12 December 2023
We recommend spending the first part of your trip out of town at Solneset Farm, a recently renovated farm stay with a private beach area and garden. Each accommodation at the 4-star farm stay has lake views, and guests can enjoy access to a sauna. This would be your best bet at spotting the Northern Lights.
The units provide views of the mountain and come with a seating area and a fully equipped kitchen, and some units include a fireplace.
The second part of the trip could be spent in Bergen, enjoying the Christmas market, which takes place between 01 - 22 Dec.
This is also when you could plan the train journey to Sognefjord Fjord.
Total price per person, based on two people sharing, using the cheapest accommodation: £323 for seven nights including flights.
May trip:

We would also recommend starting your trip at Solneset Farm. In the spring and summer months, you can make use of the barbecue facilities, and you can enjoy activities like hiking, cycling and fishing.

We might be Pirates, but we’re an honest bunch. We check all our deals when we review them to make sure everything is available. Here’s the catch: with deals this hot, things change quickly: flight prices fluctuate, hotel rooms sell out, currencies yo-yo. Mainly, demand for the best deals means the lowest prices don’t last long. But, if you’ve missed out this time, don’t worry: we’re working on more great offers.
