In fact, such was its importance that the Murano glassmakers were famously killed if they ever tried to leave the Republic of Venice. Today, of course, you (and the glassmakers) are free to leave, so it makes the perfect base to visit Venice. It avoids the serious crowds that the Floating City is known for.
