Travelling with the little ones can be brilliant—but let’s be honest, it can also be a bit of a circus. We’ve been there, fellow parent-Pirates! So, we’ve gathered some of our favourite tried-and-tested tips to help make your family holiday easier, less stressful and way more fun.
When you’re travelling with kids, where you stay can make or break the trip. Holiday homes, Airbnbs, apartments or family-friendly resorts with separate bedrooms are always a win. If you're staying in a hotel, try to find one with a bar or restaurant on site. All-inclusive hotels are even better! That way, once the kids are in bed, you can still have a cheeky glass of wine nearby. A baby monitor or app will help you keep an ear out.
🏴☠️ Pirate tip: A kitchenette makes it much easier to whip up a quick meal or snack (and helps keep food costs down). At the very least, look for a fridge to stash leftovers and emergency snacks.
Holidaying with mates who have kids the same age as yours? Golden idea. The little ones keep each other entertained, and you get a bit of adult time. It’s also handy to bring the grandparents if they’re up for it—they’ll love the time with the grandkids, and you might even sneak off for a date night.
🏴☠️ Pirate tip: Some places, like Center Parcs, let you book lodges next to each other—ideal for family-and-friends getaways.
This one’s a non-negotiable. Whatever your mode of transport—plane, train, car—having snacks to hand will save the day. Hungry kids = chaos. Full kids = peace. The maths checks out.
Getting there is often the most stressful part. Keep the little ones occupied with books, toys, colouring pads, sticker books—you name it. Download a few kids’ audiobooks or films onto a tablet. A storyteller like Lunii can also work wonders.
For older children, a mini travel journal is a great idea. They can draw, write and stick in tickets or photos—a fun way to remember the trip and stay entertained.
Whatever type of holiday you’re on—beach, city break or outdoor adventure—make sure there are things to do for all ages.
Into walking holidays? Choose routes suitable for young kids and plan in plenty of breaks (and, yes, more snacks). A decent child carrier backpack can be a lifesaver for longer walks.
Flying with kids? Here's what to know:
You can bring water for your child through security, as well as baby food and milk.
Foldable pushchairs are usually allowed in the cabin (space permitting).
Chewing gum, dummies or earplugs help with pressure during take-off and landing.
And for long-haul? The Jetkids by Stokke ride-on suitcase transforms into an in-flight bed for little ones. Genuinely brilliant for helping them get some sleep—and you a bit of peace.
Accidents happen—especially with kids—so double-check your travel insurance before you go. If you're heading abroad, make sure vaccinations are up-to-date, and you know how to find medical help locally.
