As well as some stunning – if mountainous – countryside, Georgia has a fantastic coastline. This faces west towards the Black Sea. Georgia is a fascinating place to visit at any time of the year. However, if you want to enjoy the beaches, May to September are the best months to book travel here. The same goes for hiking and nature-focused holidays. In the mountainous regions of the country, the flora and fauna are at their best in summer.
In the winter months, skiing is one of the great draws for booking holidays to Georgia. The skiing industry isn't fully developed in the county, but it is growing. Gudauri is the most developed skiing resort, with plenty of facilities for learners and more advanced skiers. Much less visited is Mestia, which is located in Svaneti. Batumi, in particular, is a family-friendly holiday destination with something for everyone. Kids will enjoy the soft sands, while teenagers and adults will love the calm, clear waters.
If you are planning on booking flights to Georgia for a skiing holiday, then check out Bakuriani. It is about a three-hour transfer from Tbilisi, but worth the extra travel. It has easy slopes for little ones to ski and snowboard, plus fun park areas. The resort also suits more experienced skiers, though, so it tends to suit families of all ages and abilities.
Where should you visit when on holiday in Georgia?
Batumi and Tbilisi are the most visited cities in Georgia. In Batumi, your holiday should include at least one ride in the city's Argo cable car. Piazza Square and Europe Square are both well worth visiting. Situated in the heart of Batumi's old quarter, they're both full of eateries and bars where you can watch the world stroll by. There's also a good aquarium, ideal for a rainy day visit, with or without children in tow.
The cobbled streets of the Abanotubani district in Tbilisi should be on your to-do list during your stay. There are bathhouses here – as there are in many other parts of the country. If you want a sulphur-rich hot spring experience, then this part of Tbilisi is for you. Don't miss Narikala Fortress, which is among Tbilisi’s most well-known landmarks. It affords spectacular views over the cityscape and the Kura River.
Booking cheap hotels and flights to Georgia
Since hotels are relatively cheap in Georgia, you can pick and choose where you stay. Some people prefer to book flights to Georgia only, spending a couple of nights in Tbilisi before touring the rest of the country. However, in the high season, it is usually advisable to book your accommodation in advance, or you may face higher room rates.
When booking flights to Georgia, London to Tbilisi is the most direct way. However, you can also find services through other European airports, which may be cheaper. If you don't mind stopping at Amsterdam or Rome, for example, this can be the most economical way to plan your holidays to Georgia. Book flights to Georgia at least three months before your intended travel dates. Last-minute flights can be obtained, but these will not necessarily mean being able to get more than one or two seats at most.
