Looking for an affordable city-break destination? Don't overlook Lithuania's capital, Vilnius, which was just rated the best-value European city break by the Post Office using their City Costs Barometer.

While it previously might not have been on your radar, there are plenty of reasons that Vilnius should be at the top of your travel list. It offers a mix of history and modernity, with one of the largest old town centres in Eastern Europe (and a UNESCO World Heritage site), with picturesque buildings and cobbled streets.

Vilnius money-saving tips

Looking for ways to save some cash on your city break to Vilnius? Well, as we mentioned, you're in luck since it's been named the best-value city in Europe. That takes into account factors such as accommodation, value of the pound, activities, dining out and drinks.

However, we can still share some of our money-saving tips and advice, to make sure you get the best value out of your trip.

  1. Free walking tours: most of the city is walkable, so take advantage of walking tours where a guide can show you the best spots.

  2. Travel in spring or autumn: temperatures are pleasant, and flight prices are low.

  3. DIY it: Book flights and hotel separate to put together a cheap city break, rather than a package. You can pack light for a couple of days and save on luggage, plus you won't need transfers since a 15-minute bus to the city costs under one euro.

  4. Eat like a local: Avoid restaurants next to the main tourist spots and instead look out for local eateries, where you can often grab a full meal for under 10 euros.

When is the best time to visit Vilnius?

Vilnius can get freezing in the winter months, with temperatures as low as -7C. But December is a good time to visit if you want to wrap up and enjoy the Christmas markets. Prices for flights are cheap at the end of November but increase during December.

The cheapest and most pleasant time to visit Vilnius is during spring and autumn, flight prices are low, and you'll have temperatures in the mid-teens, so it's ideal for walking around the city.

Summer offers the most pleasant temperatures with highs in the 20s, but locals tends to vacate during July and August, so you might find it to be a bit quiet during this time.

Getting to Vilnius

Getting to Vilnius from the UK is fairly cheap, we recommend using a comparison site like Kayak, Google Flights or Skyscanner to find the cheapest price for your dates. Spring and autumn are typically the cheapest months for flights.

Direct flights to Vilnius are only available from London City, Luton or Stansted, as the route is not yet catered for from other UK airports. You can fly indirect from most other UK airports, but prices will be higher, and it'll take longer to get there.

You'll have the option to fly with low-cost airlines Wizz Air and Ryanair, or Polish airline, LOT.

Getting around Vilnius

Getting to Vilnius centre from the airport is super easy and affordable, you can take a bus from as little as €0.65, the journey takes 15 minutes. There are different options and, they run every 10 minutes through the daytime.

The night bus runs from 22:30 to 5:30, every 30 minutes

Once in Vilnius, you can see most of the main attractions and city by foot, so getting around is incredibly easy and free. There are also plenty of bus options, with prices from €0.65 for journeys of 30-minutes and less, making it one of the cheapest cities for transport.

Save money on accommodation in Vilnius

Wondering where to stay in Vilnius that offers a central location for an affordable price? You'll have plenty of choice as there are three and 4-star hotel options available for under £50 per night.

You'll want to spend your time exploring the city, so you could save some money but opting for a lower star-rating than you usually go for, since you'll only use your hotel as a base. Or check out Airbnb for budget-friendly apartments, especially if you plan to travel as a family or group.

Use a comparison site, like Trivago, to hunt for hotels. You can set a maximum price and see the prices from various hotel providers with a map overview.

The historic Old Town is where you'll want to base yourself for most of the main sites, and the prices for accommodation here are also really reasonable. You'll also have loads of restaurant and bar options here.

If you prefer something more modern, check out hotels in Šnipiškes, which is the modern financial district within easy distance of the Old Town.

Looking for attractions in Vilnius that won't break the bank? There are loads of fun things to do and see for free, plus some activities that don't cost much.

Free things to do in Vilnius:

  1. State-owned museums are free to visit on the last Sunday of the month. Including; Gediminas Castle Tower, Palace of Grand Dukes of Lithuania and Trakai history museum in Trakai Island Castle.

  2. Every Wednesday you can visit the Contemporary Art Centre for free with a free tour at 6 pm.

  3. You can visit the Presidential Palace for free on weekends, but you'll need to book three days in advance.
